Authentic Hadith About Ramadan

Sayings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about fasting and the blessed month

"Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking his reward from Allah will have his past sins forgiven."

Sahih al-Bukhari 2014, Sahih Muslim 760 Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

"When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained."

Sahih al-Bukhari 3277, Sahih Muslim 1079 Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

"There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyan, and those who observe fasts will enter through it on the Day of Resurrection, and none except them will enter through it."

Sahih al-Bukhari 1896, Sahih Muslim 1152 Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

"Whoever gives food to a fasting person with which to break his fast will have a reward equal to his, without it detracting from the fasting person's reward in the slightest."

Understanding Ramadan 2026: A Complete Islamic Guide

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic Hijri lunar calendar and the holiest month for over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide. This comprehensive guide covers the meaning, spiritual significance, key dates, fasting rules, and practical preparation tips.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan commemorates the first revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the angel Jibreel (Gabriel) on Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Power). Muslims observe the sacred month through fasting (Sawm), increased prayer (Salah), Quran recitation (Tilawat), night prayers (Taraweeh), and charity (Zakat and Sadaqah).

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — obligatory for all adult Muslims who are physically and mentally capable. The fast runs from Fajr (pre-dawn — Sehri end) to Maghrib (sunset — Iftar), abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and sinful behavior.

Why Does Ramadan Date Change Every Year?

The Islamic Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar — each month begins with the sighting of the new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days. The Islamic year is approximately 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year. This means Ramadan advances roughly 10–12 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year.

Over a 33-year cycle, Ramadan rotates through all four seasons. Muslims in every generation experience fasting in both the long summer days and the shorter winter days — a demonstration of the universal and equitable nature of Islam.
