📖 Understanding Prayer Calculations

What are Calculation Methods?

Prayer time calculation methods are mathematical formulas used to determine the five daily Islamic prayer times based on the sun's position. Different organizations and countries use varying angle calculations for Fajr (dawn) and Isha (night) prayers, leading to slight time differences.

Popular Methods by Region

  • Umm al-Qura (Saudi Arabia): Used in Makkah and most of Saudi Arabia. Fajr angle: 18.5°, Isha: 90 minutes after Maghrib (120 minutes in Ramadan)
  • Muslim World League: Global standard used in Europe, Far East, and parts of America. Fajr angle: 18°, Isha angle: 17°
  • ISNA (North America): Islamic Society of North America. Fajr angle: 15°, Isha angle: 15°
  • Egyptian General Authority: Used in Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Malaysia, Singapore. Fajr angle: 19.5°, Isha angle: 17.5°
  • Diyanet (Turkey): Official Turkish method. Fajr angle: 18°, Isha angle: 17°

What is Iqamah?

Iqamah (إقامة) is the second call to prayer, announced immediately before the start of congregational prayer. While Adhan signals that prayer time has begun, Iqamah indicates the congregation is about to start. The gap between Adhan and Iqamah allows worshippers time to prepare, perform ablution, and reach the mosque.

Notification Types Explained

  • Push Notifications: Browser-based alerts that work even when the page is closed (requires permission)
  • Email Notifications: Receive prayer time reminders via email (requires server configuration)
  • SMS Notifications: Text message alerts to your mobile phone (requires SMS gateway setup)

Best Practices

  • Consult your local mosque to confirm which calculation method they follow
  • Set Iqamah times based on your mosque's schedule for accurate congregation times
  • Enable notifications 5-10 minutes before prayer time for proper preparation
  • Update your location when traveling to different cities or countries
